About The Speaker

Julian Merten

I am looking for structure in complex systems and as a trained theoretical Astrophysicist I have done so from many different perspectives. At the end of the day, I was always drawn to information technology. For Daimler/Mercedes-Benz Cars I am therefore deploying machine-learning based solutions to the company’s databases to, ultimately, fully optimize financial processes within Daimler/MBC. The key to this is the implementation of a positive data culture for all employees. As the Head of Data Science for the Data & Analytics team, I am particularly interested in advancing deep learning techniques for data analysis, representation learning, decision making, process acceleration, and privacy protection. In 2010 I was awarded my Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Heidelberg (Germany) and worked as a research fellow at Caltech and the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena/California (USA). I held Marie Curie Fellowships at the University of Oxford (UK) and at INAF Bologna (Italy) and taught as a lecturer at University College Oxford (UK). In my free time, I am particularly interested in the latest HPC trend, bit-level code optimization, and higher mathematics
