Julian Merten
Julian Merten
Head of Data Science at Mercedes Benz - Daimler

I am looking for structure in complex systems and as a trained theoretical Astrophysicist I have done so from many different perspectives. At the end of the day, I was always drawn to information technology. For Daimler/Mercedes-Benz Cars I am therefore deploying machine-learning based solutions to the company’s data bases to, ultimately, fully optimise financial processes within Daimler/MBC. Key to this is the implementation of a positive data culture for all employees. As the Head of Data Science for the Data & Analytics team, I am particularly interested in advancing deep learning techniques for data analysis, representation learning, decision making, process acceleration and privacy protection.

In 2010 I was awarded my PhD in Physics from the University of Heidelberg (Germany) and worked as a research fellow at Caltech and the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena/California (USA). I held Marie Curie Fellowships at the University of Oxford (UK) and at INAF Bologna (Italy) and taught as a lecturer at University College Oxford (UK). In my free time, I am particularly interested in the latest HPC trend, bit-level code optimisation and higher mathematics.

Prof. Dr. Danko Nikolic
Max-Planck Institute for Brain Research, Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies

The main motive for my studies is the explanatory gap between the brain and the mind. My interest is in how the physical world of neuronal activity produces the mental world of perception and cognition. I am associated with the Max-Planck Institute for Brain Research, Ernst Strüngmann Institute, Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies, and the University of Zagreb.

I approach the problem of explanatory gap from both sides, bottom-up and top-down. The bottom-up approach investigates brain physiology. The top-down approach investigates the behavior and experiences. Each of the two approaches led me to develop a theory: The work on behavior and experiences led me to discover the phenomenon of ideasthesia (meaning “sensing concepts”). The work on physiology resulted in the theory of practopoiesis (meaning “creation of actions”).

The empirical work in the background of those theories involved simultaneous recordings of activity of 100+ neurons in the visual cortex (extracellular recordings), behavioral and imaging studies in visual cognition (attention, working memory, long-term memory), and empirical investigations of phenomenal experiences (synesthesia).

The ultimate goal of my studies is twofold. First, I would like to achieve conceptual understanding of how the dynamics of physical processes creates the mental ones. I believe that the work on practopoiesis presents an important step in this direction and that it will help us eventually address the hard problem of consciousness and the mind-body problem in general. Second, I would like to use this theoretical knowledge to create artificial systems that are biologically-like intelligent and adaptive.
